Brand Manifesto

The Rebel Manifesto - Kohl's

My entry into the galaxy of concepts for a Star Wars and Kohl's collaboration focused on the opportunities for all people to see themselves in the fantastical worlds of Star Wars. The manifesto echoes the Kohl's "Find Your Yes" master-brand campaign, including a broadcast script that mimics Kohl's series of first-person "Find Your Yes" spots.

Brand Manifesto

Stumble into any scene in Star Wars and you’ll find musicians among warriors, thieves among royalty, bounty hunters among hunted bounties, and aliens ... lots and lots of aliens.

But there’s a thing about those scenes ... even though they couldn’t be more alien, they feel like home and their denizens feel like family.

Star Wars isn’t just a movie, it’s not just a franchise, it’s a place. It’s a home far, far away from home.

Anyone can enter the worlds of Star Wars and find any adventure they seek .... It’s the frontier of imagination. Rusty spaceships fly from desert marketplaces to ice fortresses, from caves to moons ... except that’s no cave: it’s a space beast. And wait, that’s no moon: it’s a space station.

Where will you end up? It’s up to you to set course, and it’s up to the adventure to unfurl.

Star Wars is a place where a kid can become a jedi, a smuggler can be a hero, and where the only limitation is that you always let the wookie win. You can be three feet high and lift a starfighter in the air, you can call for help and become the voice of an intergalactic rebellion, you can be a poor kid from Tatooine who unlocks a forgotten force and spurs a New Republic.

Who do you want to be? In Star Wars, you can be anyone. And at Kohl’s, we’ll power your way there.

A Star Wars and Kohl’s collaboration is about this thing we share: finding your own personal part in an epic adven- ture ... and how, when you find that part, you can’t help but show the universe.

Lake Artoo

FADE IN:
EXT. FOREST PATH - DAY
We’re seeing from the perspective of a CHILD. She looks around a small lake – seemingly in the middle of nowhere – and then up at her MOM, who is beaming – clearly excit- ed for the big leap her child is about to make.

MOM
Come on! This’ll be great. I know you can do it.

SUPERIMPOSE: Yes to trips that take us far away.
The CHILD’s view moves to a small-but-still-formidable ridge along the water ... She climbs up. We get a glimpse of a tire swing hanging from a tree, and get the idea that this is a spot known for taking cool plunges on hot sum- mer days.

MOM
I remember when Grandpa brought me down here ... You ready?

SUPERIMPOSE: Yes to traditions started long ago.

CHILD
Alright ... I’ll give it a try.

MOM
Well, do it or don’t do it, but don’t just try.

CHILD
Okay ... Here we go ...

The child peeks over the edge into the water and steps back. She lifts up her hand ... We see her eyes close ... blackness. The sound of water gushing and MOM almost whispering ...

MOM
There you go ... there you go ... Yes!

The CHILD opens her eyes and we see her hand still raised, she’s still above and overlooking the water – the crescendo of a John Williams’ Star Wars anthem is playing – but there’s an X-Wing spaceship, the kind Luke Skywalk- er flew, beat up and covered in lake weeds and dripping water, hovering in the air in front of her.

SUPERIMPOSE: Yes to Star Wars. Kohl’s. Find Your Yes. FADE OUT.
